Step 1.
Select the ‘Secure’ button in the toolbar.
Step 2.
Select ‘Password Encryption’. A dialog box of settings will appear.
Step 3.
Select compatibility – ‘Acrobat 7 and later’.
(The earlier versions of Acrobat have lower encryption levels. Note that if you select the ‘Acrobat 7 and later’ option the document cannot be opened in Acrobat 6.0 or earlier, but you will have more encryption options.)
Step 4.
Choose what level of encryption you’d like:
- Encrypt all document contents.
- Encrypt all document contents except metadata (A6 & later).
- Encrypt only file attachment (A7 & later).
Step 5.
Click ‘Require a password’ to open your document and insert a password in this field.
Step 6.
Select ‘Permissions of the document’ and click ‘Restrict editing and printing of the document’. A password will be now be required to change these permission settings. Enter a password in this field.
Choose printing permissions: None, low res or high res.
Choose which editing permissions you want from the list of options.
Step 7.
Select ‘Enable copy of text, images and other content’ if you wish.
Step 8.
‘Enable text access for screen reader devices for the visually impaired’ is automatically selected.
Step 9.
Click OK. A ‘Confirm password’ dialog box opens. Enter the Open Document password.
Step 10.
Finally, you will need to save the document before the security settings are applied.
